What?! Most protein bars have stuff in them that has been created in a lab by mad scientists.
Say it isn’t so! Unfortunately, it is. But there are many things you can do, including buying from Bhu. In this article we’re going to break down the GMO dilemma, and, include some things you can do about it.
The “Why” Behind GMOS
There has been a lot of controversy over genetically modified organisms and what it means by introducing them into our bodies and our agricultural systems. First of all, lets look at the root reason why GMO’s were created.
I’ve got two words for you: Money and Roundup. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are used by the agricultural industry to either enhance crops in some specific way, like increasing crop resistance to the pesticides they use, or to make foods last longer like the flavor savor tomato. Are these intentions really healthy when it comes to food? Personally, I would want the people producing my food to be motivated to create health and inspire well-being.
Even more troubling, the pesticides GMOs are designed to resist pollute our water, soil, air, and bodies. In one study by the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, “glyphosate (Roundup) disrupts human cellular structure and function.” This is the only study to hint to the dangers of pesticides. Over the years, other studies have shown a link between this pesticide and serious health problems ranging from to cancer and intestinal microbe destruction to contaminated breast milk. “The levels of glyphosate that were found in samples of human breast milk were 760 to 1600 times higher than the allowable threshold for the presence of a pesticide in European drinking water. (2)” Other independent studies have tested GMOs on animals, which died of increased toxicity levels and damage to DNA, organs, and reproductive systems (3). Totally depressing, I know, but there are healthy alternatives.
Protect your Health with Organic Foods
When you go organic, you are not only feeding yourself with considerably less contaminated food; you are also voting with your dollar and letting the agricultural industry know that you care about the heath of yourself, others, and the earth. Go a step further by buying local organic produce from area farmers markets. Not only are you supporting yourself, but you’re also supporting your neighbors, local businesses, and the land that you live on. Over the years, many have become very disconnected from the land we live on, forgetting that the land provides a home, food, and other basic necessities. Nature is a powerful supporter and healer, and by choosing organic foods, you can reconnect with Mother Nature and regain an new appreciation for the Earth.
At Bhu, we believe that the healthiest food comes from the Earth, a 4.5 million year old expert in evolution, not from a still developing GMO industry. Bhu (pronounced “BOO”) is a Sanskrit word that means “of the earth.” It is a sacred trust: honoring the earth that supports all life. Help us honor the Earth and keep life in balance by choosing organics and boycotting GMOs.
